March

Finally, it is Spring! I think I was expecting daffodils to emerge instantly from the earth, blooms to burst into flower and a cacophony of bird song to fill the air on the 1st March! Unfortunately it's still quiet cold and today little fluffy flakes of snow appear intermittently in the frosty wind. But some of my bulbs have begun to poke their heads up through their duvet of soil and my mind is a-buzz with ideas for the garden and impatience to get out there and feel the earth in my hands and under my finger nails!

I have already purchased this planting combination of Campanula lactifolia ‘Prichards Variety’ and Aconitum 'Ivorine' from Sarah Raven although I have to keep reminding myself I won't be able to replicate this photo exactly in my garden!

I have plans to replace our black plastic and glass garden table (impulse buy at Homebase when we first moved to house and needed something to at in the garden!) with a lovely new (old!) round metal table. A pretty bird house is also in order too - we need to provide some sanctuary for the little sparrows etc. that dare to venture to our garden with our two felines prowling around (although thankfully they haven't caught any birds so far).

And I would like to plant more roses this year, I already have climbing roses towards to end of the garden but I would like to plant some in the flower beds near the seating area. Plus an old watering can - the one in this photo is so sweet! And I wouldn't mind the old brick wall too...actually I wouldn't mind transplanting this whole photo into my little garden!

Is anyone else suffering from itchy green fingers?

  1. As a lazy reader I always look at the pictures first and was amazed at how far on your garden was! This is certainly the time of year to start dreaming of warmer months spent outside - although they seem a long way off at the moment! I've definitely got those itchy fingers - having a couple of days of sunshine last week was such a tease x Jane

  2. I certainly am. This winter just seems never ending, especially after the false promise of last week.
Your photos are lovely, how much I look forward to sunshine and warmth.

  3. Itchy fingers have started already here in Northumberland....200 bare rooted hornbeams around the woodland garden as the start off a hedge. Can't wait to see it shoot away...

Just been reading all your lovely posts and I agree cottage garden flowers and old roses are just a perfect combination against an old wall. Will you be making the trip down to Wisborough on Thursday, the one in April is on a Saturday so might be better for you. One fair that would be close is the Brocante fair in Cheam looks like it is going to be a beautiful fair on 9th May. Your cottage looks beautiful. see you very soon
    love Jillx

    1. Hi Jill,
I won't be at Wisborough this Thursday as I'm going to the CL Fair on Wednesday. But I will definitely have a think about the one in April and the Brocante fair looks very tempting...
So glad you like my cottage - am getting very excited about Village Vintage in May!

  9. We are moving slowly into Autumn so things are dying down here but I still love pottering. I love the photo of the shed, we have a ugly little duckling of a shed that I intend improving and your photo has given me inspiration so thank you:)
