Hidden

When we first moved into our cottage last August we have spent so much on doing some small renovations and buying all the necessary white goods that we couldn't afford a tv. I'll admit that before we moved I had become a bit of tv addict so I was glad for the chance to go semi cold turkey. I could still watch any programmes that interested me on the internet and I learnt a bit more restraint (we had Sky+ before we moved and there always seemed to be something to watch - reruns of Sherlock Holmes were a particular weakness of mine!)

More than a year on my husband and I were finally tired of watching things together at the dining room table and talk turned to buying a tv. But the more I thought about it the less I liked the idea of a huge black rectangle sucking all the ambiance out of our cosy sitting room. I have quite strict views concerning televisions and while I obviously appreciate technology, wall mounting it on chimney breasts above the fireplace seems like sacrilege!

Salvation was found in the idea of a cupboard to put the tv in, we scoured eBay and antique markets for something thin enough not to overwhelm our petite sitting room but large enough to take the size of tv that we wanted. Initially I was looking for an old linen press or wardrobe but our searches were fruitless. Until I came across some old Victorian cupboard doors and I thought - if we can't find what we want why not just make it? This was the result:

Now you see it...

Now you don't!

  8. This is fantastic. I need to do something similar in my little summer house. I "need" a tv in the living room, but I don't want it to overwhelm the small room. Perfect solution!

  15. It looks great! We were lucky enough to get a very similar unit in dark brown/black from Ikea before they discontinued making it. Now it is very hard to find anything like it. I like to keep our t.v hidden too. We have since upgraded our 30 inch flatscreen to a 42 and it barely fits! But my eyes were getting sore from all the squinting! Happiness in the new year to you! and your sweet kitties. ox

  17. Hello,
Very nice cupboard, I once did a similar thing some time ago. Years ago they used to hide TVs under tables with cloths on, sadly that look is a bit dated now, but it was a good idea at the time.
